Use case 3.1: Monitoring of Livestock and Transport along Routes

Challenge

Ensuring animal welfare during transport is critical for Denmark's agricultural sector, especially under stringent EU and national regulations. Real-time monitoring of location, temperature, and vehicle status is essential to prevent animal stress and ensure compliance. However, existing telemetry systems often struggle with connectivity issues in rural areas, leading to data gaps and increased risks for animal welfare and regulatory compliance.

Aim

This use case aims to provide seamless connectivity for livestock transport, ensuring continuous monitoring and real-time data transmission. By leveraging advanced communication technologies, the goal is to enhance animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.

Solution

The project will deploy multi-connectivity solutions in livestock transport units, equipped with multi-access gateways that maintain multiple active links simultaneously. Two configurations will be explored: cellular-satellite multi-connectivity for global coverage, and cellular-based multi-connectivity with dual modems for enhanced signal strength. These technologies will be tested to determine the best approach for reliable connectivity along transport routes.

Benefit

Implementing these solutions will significantly enhance animal welfare by ensuring continuous monitoring and prompt issue resolution during transport. It will simplify regulatory compliance by ensuring accurate and timely data transmission. Operational efficiency will be improved through better route planning, reduced delays, and enhanced communication between transport units and operational centers. These improvements will reduce costs and increase profitability for transport companies.

This initiative is a collaborative effort among transport companies, technology providers, regulatory bodies, and animal welfare organizations. Regular workshops and consultations with stakeholders ensure that the developed solutions are practical, compliant, and effective in real-world scenarios, fostering innovation and meeting the needs of end-users.
